The Naperville North High School’s girls basketball team continued its strong season by defeating Neuqua Valley High School on Thursday.

The Huskies (21-2) won by a final score of 57-28.

The team ended the first half with a lead of 30-14 as a result of the team’s great defense and three pointers. Despite the strong start, some of the Huskies were disappointed in their performance in the first half. Head coach Erin Colletti explained what they can improve on, learning from the first half.

“This was not our best performance. The first half, we were a little out of our game. We were forcing shots, not sharing the ball like we normally do. We ended up with a 30 point win, so I can’t be disappointed, but we’re always wanting to get better,” Colletti said.

The Huskies came out swinging in the second half with strong defense and rebounds. Senior Kenzie Hare finished the game with seven steals and 14 points, adding to the team’s success. Hare discussed the team’s mindset and how it helped them play the game.

“It’s a conference game and we have a goal to win conference so we knew we had to come out strong. [We] played to the best of our ability,” Hare said.

The team were also sporting their “Women Ball Too” sweatshirts, which represent their support of gender equality in basketball. The team expressed that the school support has grown tremendously this year and many Huskies came out to the game wearing the sweatshirts. The equality in support and treatment has helped the team grow and improve.

“Before this season, there wouldn’t be a lot of spectators at our games. It’s really nice to see people coming out, supporting us, [and] wearing the sweatshirts,” junior Layla Henderson said.

“It means so much to us. It feels so good when you look into the stands and you have your school behind you,” Hare said.

The Huskies will play their next game against Downers Grove North. Tip-off is scheduled for  Jan. 25 at 7:00 p.m. at home.
