Naperville North Senior Samantha Kelly is the kind of point guard that controls more than just the basketball; she controls the pace of the game itself.
With a deep understanding of speed of play, timing, and teamwork, Kelly sets the tone every time she steps on the court, dictating how her team plays and keeping everyone chained to the same rhythm.
As one of Naperville North’s varsity girls’ four captains, Kelly’s offensive numbers embody the new selflessness the team has taken on this year. She’s a three-level scorer who puts points up at the rim, mid-range, and in 3-point areas and understands that moments matter more than statistics. The varsity head coach, Aly Miller, described Kelly’s impact by saying it “amplifies both ends,” from driving to the basket to timing passes perfectly. Defensively, Kelly’s energy is constant. Hudl statistics show she averages three steals and four deflections per game. Her fast and aggressive playstyle is exactly what Miller wants to see on the court.
“She controls the game at our pace… that’s the role of a point guard every coach wants to achieve,” Miller said.
Kelly’s leadership is built on trust; trust in herself, her coaches, her teammates, and the relationships she has cultivated within the program. As a senior captain, she has learned to balance confidence with coachability, creating an environment where accountability moves in every direction. That trust extends beyond the coaching staff and into the locker room, where teammates are empowered to challenge and support one another.
That foundation is most visible in high-pressure moments. In tight fourth quarters or during difficult stretches, Kelly remains calm and composed, focused on elevating the players around her rather than forcing the spotlight onto herself.
Her impact is felt even when the shots aren’t falling. Junior Shooting Guard Mia Podkasik, who has played alongside Kelly for more than two years, sees that influence every time they share the court.
“She’s the best point guard I have ever played with,” Podkasik said. “Even when she is in a shooting slump, she opens the court for us and creates those shot opportunities.”
Kelly’s leadership is also rooted in preparation and basketball IQ. She studies film and scouting reports to gain small advantages that benefit the entire team. She plays a role that is shown beyond game nights and box scores. She prioritizes team chemistry and inclusion, making sure younger players feel supported.
“These girls are like my family, like my sisters,” Kelly said. “I never want freshmen or JV girls to be scared or unnoticed, because I know how that can feel.”
After a strong offseason playing travel basketball at M14, Kelly was able to enter her senior year with renewed confidence, one that continues to translate onto the court and into her leadership. Her growth hasn’t gone unnoticed, especially by her family, who have seen the leadership and selflessness at home and on the stands at every game.
“We couldn’t be more proud of the young woman she has become,” Monica Kelly, Samantha’s mom said.
