Huskie boys soccer wins sectional title

On Saturday, the Naperville North High School varsity boys soccer team took down rival Naperville Central High School to win the sectional title.

The Huskies (21-5-2) beat the Redhawks (15-8-1) with a final score of 3-2.

The game started rocky for the Huskies, with the Redhawks scoring an early goal in the first half. The Huskies struggled to gain momentum against their opponent. Junior Alex Barger believes that in the first half, the team needed to get into a better mindset to finish off the game well.

“I thought we definitely lacked technical focus in the first half,” Barger said. “We let in 2 goals that we definitely did not want to let in and that brought us down.”

In the second half, senior midfielder Jaxon Grier tied up the game, 2-2, after hitting a header off an assist from Barger. Grier commented on how it benefited the team’s psyche.

“When Alex played that ball and I scored, we created a lot of momentum and kept pushing ourselves,” Grier said.

The game winning goal brought the score to 3-2 after senior outside forward Jacob Ryu went in across from Barger at the five minute mark. Ryu believes that a mix-up of his teammates’ positions was all he needed to secure a goal.

“As soon as our coach moved Alex to the left side, [we] definitely became more of an attacking group, we got more forward and it all clicked,” Ryu said.

The Huskies will play their next game against Morton on Tuesday, Nov. 2 for the Super Sectional. Kickoff is at 7:00pm at Lewis University.
