Breaking news: Schools closed again due to extreme weather

Tuesday’s “cold day” is the 4th this year

This afternoon, District 203 announced, its decision to cancel school tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 28, due to extreme weather conditions.

The entire Chicagoland area is under a wind chill warning, which for DuPage County does not expire until Wednesday evening. WGN-TV reports that wind chills are expected to plummet to as low as 40 below zero. The low temps combined with strong wind gusts make for dangerous conditions.

As District 203’s fourth cancellation this year, tomorrow’s cold day will extend the school calendar well past Memorial Day weekend, with the last day of school now set for Thursday, June 5.

Many students, such as junior Natalie Mitchell, are doing what they can to embrace the cold. Mitchell even found a positive side to the delayed summer vacation.

“It’s nice to have the break,” Mitchell said. “We now have an extra weekend [at the end of the year] to study and prepare for finals.”

Junior Maddy Smith isn’t cowering inside during these frigid days.  She’s embracing her time off of school to pursue her love of skiing.

“[The time off] is definitely a good opportunity to get some training in,” Smith said. “I’ve skied in lots colder though so I’m definitely willing to be [outside] as long as the ski hills stay open.”

Though Smith is happy to have the extended weekend, some students, like senior Arpan Rau, are less than excited about the revisions to District 203’s calendar.

As a student in Multi-Variable Calculus with a test that was originally scheduled for Monday, Rau believes that the unexpected cancellation of school may be detrimental to his class’ calendar.

“Personally, I’m thrilled for the extra time,” Rau said. “But the two days off will make things more stressful at the end of the year.”
