On Wednesday, May 13, Naperville North released a message stating that the scores for Juniors who took the Spring Online ACT would be recalculated.
While scores are being recalculated, students will no longer be able to access their score reports from the test in April. In an email sent out to the affected test-takers, ACT explained their decision to recalculate scores.
“To ensure fairness and accuracy, we are reviewing scores and will reissue scores for students who took the test online during the school day,” ACT announced.
In the same email, ACT also assured students that their scores would only go up or stay the same. In an interview with The Columbus Dispatch, Juan Elizondo, director of strategic communications for ACT, discussed what prompted ACT to recalculate scores.
“What we discovered in that process is that outcomes for students who took the online test during the school day this spring, their scores did not meet what we expected,” Elizondo explained.
In the same article, Elizondo estimated how scores are expected to change in each section of the ACT.
In the reading section, 95% of scores will stay the same or increase by one point, while 5% will go up by two points. In the science section, 99% of scores will stay the same or increase by one point, while 1% will go up by two points. In the math section, 97% of scores will stay the same or increase by one point, while 3% will go up by two points. In the English section, 98% of scores will stay the same or increase by one point, while 2% will go up by two points.
The test administered for the April ACT was different from what many students had taken in the past, with a shorter testing time, fewer questions per section, and a newly optional science section. ACT has made no comment on if the new test influenced their decision to recalculate scores.
Students can expect their updated scores from the ACT no later than June 2nd.
