During 7th period on Thursday, March 26th, Naperville North entered a soft lockdown across the building.
Students and staff were told to remain in their secured spaces until further notified, and in an email sent out to parents across the district, Principal Jay Wachtel assured the safety of those in the building.
“Naperville North has been placed in a ‘Secure & Teach’ out of an abundance of caution. All students and staff are safe, and instruction is continuing,” Wachtel said.
Before the communication to parents and the announcement across the PA system, teachers received an email at the end of 6th period explaining the ongoing situation. Early in the afternoon on Thursday, there was a phone call threatening a school shooting, and soon after the building entered a Hold in Place and Secure status. Wachtel said in an announcement Friday morning that the call was one of a series of threats that have been made to schools in the Chicago-Suburban area.
Students, including those with early dismissal, were held in their 7th period classes until the end of the day, where they were dismissed at the regular dismissal time of 3:10. All afterschool activities were cancelled for the rest of the day.
In an email sent to the parents of Naperville North students at 3:37 PM, Jay Wachtel explained that the incident will continue to be investigated.
“The incident remains under investigation by the Naperville Police Department, and [Naperville North] is grateful for their collaboration,” Wachtel said.
