Underclassmen shine in frosh/soph play

Our Teacher is an Alien proved both engaging and informative

By Staff Writer Jena Fakroddin

This year’s freshmen and sophomore fall play, Our Teacher is an Alien by Jeff Lovett, made its debut in the NPAC last Thursday, Oct. 17, and concluded that same weekend.

The play revolved around a group of high school students who are eager to prove that their new math teacher is an alien. They based their evidence off of the noises they hear her make, her supposed “brain washing” controls, and the strange green light illuminating from her house. While they resolve the silly mystery, the audience gets an inside look at the different types of bullying that occur among the students.

Our Teacher is an Alien was well done. It was appropriate for the show to run this month, especially since October is anti-bullying awareness month. The play provided valuable messages that demonstrated how to prevent bullying and the effects it has on everyone.

Each act started with a series of video clips from anti-bullying websites, sharing real stories of children and teenagers who have been victimized. The display bolstered the overall message of the play. In fact, many audience members were moved to tears after watching the tragic clips unfold.

Each well-developed character represented a different stereotype found among high school students, bullies, bystanders, victims, and intermediaries. The characters were well played with unique personalities. The play had a perfect mixture of comedy and seriousness, and the audience felt every emotion alongside the characters.

The play maintained the audience’s attention; however, the actors could have used better pronunciation when reciting lines. At times, the actors’ words were scarcely heard. Every so often, an actor would rush through lines or speak in a way where they lost the sentence’s ending.

The production of Our Teacher is an Alien is excellent. All ages enjoyed the play, and the message applied to all. It was a heart-warming experience and an inside look on the power of standing up against bullying.
