As the future nears, it’s becoming more common for celebrities to transition from one type of media to another. This can be based on passion, pure talent, or even just the start to a new chapter. Some key examples in the last couple of years include the infamous singer, Lady Gaga, with her starring role in the 2018 film A Star Is Born and the favored rapper, Tyler, the Creator, with his supporting role in the 2025 film Marty Supreme.
The 2025 A24 sports/drama film, produced by Josh Safdie and starring Timothée Chalamet as the world-class table tennis player Marty Mauser, premiered in theaters on Christmas Day under the title Marty Supreme.
Marty Mauser is a phenomenal table tennis player, one of the best in the world. Unfortunately, he struggles with his finances, impairing his ability to pursue his dream of becoming the world champion table tennis player. One of Marty’s closest friends is named Wally, who is played by Tyler Okonma, or more commonly known as the popular rapper “Tyler, the Creator.” In the film, Wally is a taxi driver who repeatedly helps Marty with the mischievous adventures that he takes in order to obtain money for his goals.
Within the past few months, Tyler, the Creator was ranked #102 out of all artists in the world, averaging roughly 43 million monthly listeners, according to Spotify. Some of his most popular albums included the 2017 GRAMMY nominee for “Best Rap Album,” Flower Boy, along with the GRAMMY-winning successes of 2019, IGOR, and 2021 CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST. Okonma deviates from the stereotypical rap image in multiple ways, including his eccentric style, goofy online personality, engaging concert performances, and even his long range from soft rap to intense, screaming rap. His individuality is what makes his fan base so fond of him, and his new presence as an actor in Marty Supreme sparked a lot of interest and excitement across social media leading up to the release of the film.
With it being Okonma’s first big acting gig, his role was described as significant screen time, not just a cameo, according to the New York Times. Furthermore, the film’s casting director, Jennifer Venditti, explained how the producers of Marty Supreme, the Safdie brothers, had their eye on Okonma since 2015, when he attended a Q&A hosted by the brothers. They stated that they felt he had an “incredible face” for cinema, and that “he’s a natural.”
From his Grammy-winning music to his outstanding acting, Tyler, the Creator is a man of many talents. Okonma is only beginning his acting journey, and fans can expect to see him in more films in the near future.
In addition to Okonma, other popular singers have taken similar routes into acting. Another notable example being the 2018 film A Star Is Born, which is a romance/musical film directed by Bradley Cooper, starring Bradley Cooper as Jackson Maine and Lady Gaga as Ally Campana. was a hit. It’s rated an outstanding 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In the film, Jackson Maine is a famous yet troubled artist. He stumbles upon a talented young singer, Ally Campana, and ends up falling in love with her. As he helps her musical career take off, his own struggles deepen, ultimately straining their relationship. It is an emotional yet powerful film, with both of the actors’ performances speaking loudly to many. Cooper and Gaga ended up winning a GRAMMY for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
Lady Gaga, a 14-time GRAMMY-winner, is one of the most well-known pop artists in the world, being ranked 7th in the world according to Spotify. Her most-streamed albums include The Fame (2008) and The Fame Monster (2009), both of which are GRAMMY winners. Her most-streamed song is Shallow with an absurd yet deserving 2.7 billion streams on Spotify alone. This song is actually a collaboration with Bradley Cooper, and was the song played in A Star is Born that won Cooper and Gaga their duo GRAMMY.
Gaga is an unparalleled musical artist who has not only received many awards for her music but has also accomplished many exceptional milestones, such as performing for the 2026 Super Bowl Halftime Show and singing the National Anthem at the 2020 Presidential Inauguration.
So, the question stands: is the transition from musical artist to actor worth it? I think it’s completely worth the transition if the talent and the passion are there. Okonma and Gaga are extremely talented individuals in their own ways. While Gaga has more experience in both the musical and acting worlds, Okonma is just getting started with his. Okonma should be proud of his achievements thus far: being a part of the most successful A24 movie as of 2026. I think it’s fascinating how people such as Okonma and Gaga found elaborate ways to express themselves that deviate from the majority of musical artists, and I think that this transition may turn out to be a trend in the next decade or so.
