The eight best rom-coms to watch this Valentine’s Day

Whether you are in a romantic relationship or just rejoicing with friends, Valentine’s day is a perfect time to celebrate your love for the people around you. One of the best and most popular things to do, besides gorging on chocolate, is to watch a romantic comedy movie (rom-com). It can be hard to choose which is the most entertaining movie to watch, so here are eight of the best movies to watch this Valentine’s Day.

  1. Secretly in love with your best friend but afraid they will never notice you? Check out Always Be My Maybe on Netflix. This movie is the story of childhood best friends and next-door neighbors Sasha and Marcus (played by Ali Wong and Randall Park) who grew up together, but eventually fell out of touch. The pair reconnect as adults and ignite the feelings they kept a secret as teens. The chemistry between the leads and feel-good ending makes you believe you too can end up with your best friend.
  2. Could your boyfriend secretly come from a rich family in another country and be considered famous back home? Crazy Rich Asians, adapted from the popular book written by Kevin Kwan, follows the story of Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) and her boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding) as they travel to Singapore to attend a friend’s wedding. Rachel soon learns that Nick is not who he says he is. She meets Nick’s crazy rich family, and quickly learns that her time in Singapore will not be easy. With dramatic plot twists, great comedic timing, and a guaranteed HEA (happily ever after), this movie will make you wish your future boyfriend was secretly famous, rich and cute.
  3. For the valentine who feels tired and overworked, consider watching Set It Up, the story of Harper and Charlie (played by Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell), two twenty-five-year-olds who are losing control of their lives due to demanding bosses. The two meet while picking up their bosses’ late-night dinners and commiserate over their lack of time and social lives. They decide to set up their bosses. Harper and Charlie soon realize that selfish intentions do not always get you the results you expect, but they may get you the results you need.
  4. Has your past ever turned into the best mistake you could ever make? To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, based on the popular book series by Jenny Han, follows Lara Jean Covey (Lana Candor)’s romantic letters that she wrote to all of her past loves. The letters, that were never intended to see the light of day, get sent. In a panic to avoid Josh, her sister’s ex-boyfriend, Lara Jean kisses her old friend and letter receiver, Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo). They agree to “fake date” in order to keep Josh from confronting Lara Jean. With a shy girl learning to love, and accept true love in return, and a boy who would do anything for the girl he likes, this movie will surely make you want to find your own fake boyfriend.
  5. When Harry Met Sally answers the age-old question of whether men and women can actually be “just friends.” Harry (Billy Crystal) first meets Sally (Meg Ryan), over a shared ride from college graduation to their new lives in New York City. Sally wanted to be friends, but Harry explained that men and women can’t be “just friends” because one always wants a relationship and in turn, ruins the friendship. They part ways and meet again on a plane. Both are in relationships, and Harry is about to get married. He still believes they cannot be friends even if in relationships with others. Years later, they bump into each other in a bookstore and catch up. Both are single and actually enjoy being friends. They even attempt to set one another up with their own best friends and get interesting results. Watch to find out if Harry and Sally can truly be friends, or if life has another plan for them.
  6. Could you imagine falling in love with someone you have never met before? Love, Simon is based on the popular book “Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda” by Becky Albertalli. Simon (Nick Robinson), a closeted gay high schooler, starts messaging another closeted gay student who uses the pen name Blue. While trying to find Blue’s identity, Simon deals with blackmail, friend drama and the reality of being a gay teenager in high school. With a guaranteed happy ending, this modern-day romance will make you want to find the one who loves you for who you are.
  7. For the Shakespeare fan who wants a modern uptake on a classic story, try 10 Things I Hate About You. This movie is a modern retelling of the Shakespeare play “The Taming of the Shrew.” What do you do when your father won’t let you date unless your “shrewish” older sister is dating? Set her up with the school bad boy, that’s what. The ensuing miscommunication, changes of heart and misunderstandings reveal a fun twist on taming both the shrew and the bad boy in the end.
  8. Finally, are you looking for a movie packed with Hollywood star power? Look no further than Valentine’s Day. (Julia Roberts, Ashton Kutcher, Jennifer Garner, Taylor Lautner, Bradley Cooper, Anne Hathaway, Taylor Swift, Emma Roberts, Jamie Foxx and Patrick Dempsey) act out every romantic plot all in one movie. Best friends who don’t know they are in love? A woman who thinks she’s in love but the guy is married? Guy thinks a girl loves him but she doesn’t? First-grade crush on a teacher? Heartthrob pro-athlete wants to come out as homosexual and show his true love how much he means to him? This movie has it all. It’s a good choice for someone wanting a good laugh at others in worse love situations than themselves.

No matter your current relationship status, these movies will make you pine over the main characters and wish you lived in a rom-com. So get your chocolate, your friends and family or your significant other in front of a TV and celebrate Valentine’s Day the way it should be celebrated, surrounded by those you love.
