A lone white disc floats overhead as eyes carefully follow the object, and bodies soon crash into each other.

For Naperville North’s ultimate frisbee team, this is a scene witnessed every week. According to senior captain Sherwin Solomon, team members have been practicing their throws, catches, backhands and flicks since September in preparation for the start of the spring season.

“We have practice in the fall for people to see if they enjoy playing, but we start as soon as the weather gets nice enough to be outside in spring,” Solomon said.

Ultimate frisbee was brought to NNHS in 2010 by students. Since then, the team has grown to have over 25 players. Members compete in games every Monday and occasionally in weekend tournaments.

This past weekend, both the ‘B’ and ‘A’ teams competed in the Neuqua Knockout tournament in Joliet. Out of 12 teams in its class, the ‘B’ team took home third.

“[The ‘A’ team] placed 22nd out of 35 teams,” Solomon said. “But our team is made of 97 percent new members, so we were really happy with that.”

According to coach Dave Lindsey, the team has been working extremely hard this year and has been focusing on its new players.

“We have four players that are playing again this year,” Lindsey said. “The rest of the team is brand new, and we’ve been working with them on their throws and their abilities.”

Senior Josh Lenning joined the ultimate frisbee team this year.

“I joined ultimate frisbee because a lot of my friends are on the team and everyone gets along,” Lenning said. “It’s still really intense but not as stressful as other sports. It’s just a lot of fun.”

Lindsey stated that training new members to play was not as hard as he had imagined.

“A lot of these players play other sports as well,” Lindsey said. “For them, it’s just translating their athleticism into ultimate offense and defense.”

On Monday, April 27, the team will be playing against Naperville Central at 4:30 p.m.
