The girls cross country team took second place yesterday during the IHSA state meet at Detweiller Park, scoring 112 points.
Junior Elly DeTurris took 10th overall and first for the Huskies. She was followed closely by senior Maria McDaniel, who claimed a 14th place overall finish.
Head Coach Dan Iverson said he was pleased with how all the members of the team performed.
“Elly and Maria had their two best races ever,” Iverson said. “But, we had seven people that went out there and did the best they knew how to do today so there is no star.”
Last year, the girls team earned a state championship title. However, according to DeTurris, the team is thrilled with their second place finish this season.
“I think that our team did wonderful,” DeTurris said. “Everyone went out there and ran to their best potential, and that’s all we can ask for.”
Iverson is optimistic about the future of the team.
“We’re going to get better. That’s always what we should be looking at. Looking ahead to see where they can go,” Iverson said.
The boys team raced an hour after the girls and finished 9th in state scoring 285 points.
The team was lead by junior Kerry Gschwendtner, who came in 35th overall, and senior Jake Pecorin, who took 54th.
Both teams will participate in Nike Cross Regionals, a race unaffiliated with NNHS, in Terre Haute, Indiana next weekend. This serves as the qualifying race for Nike cross nationals, which the girls participated in last December.
