Last night, Oct. 15, the NNHS boys varsity soccer team (9-6-2) took on their rival, Naperville Central (13-2-2), at the NNHS stadium. While the boys fought valiantly, they lost to NCHS 4-1.
NCHS scored the first goal early in the game, but the referee called it offsides. Soon after, NCHS took the lead in the game, scoring a goal in the 31st minute of the first half. The Huskies had few chances to score against the strong NCHS defense, and they could not finish the opportunities when they were there.
“We physically and mentally didn’t play up to our own [standards] and to their standards. Next game we will have to make much quicker decisions and play a lot smarter,” said junior Huskie defender Wesley Wong.
Junior goalkeeper Christian Robert played an active role throughout the game, and he made some great saves. Although, NCHS soon scored again in the 22nd minute and increased their lead to 2-0. The Huskies continued their fight against NCHS but went into the half down 2-0.
With a goalie change to start the second half, NNHS senior goalkeeper Greg Mullholland and the Huskie defense continued defending the strong Redhawk offense, but NCHS scored again with 28 minutes left in the second half. The Redhawks put in one final goal for the game with 12 minutes left, increasing their lead to 4-0. Freshman Chris Sullivan was able to get the Huskies on the board with a final score of 4-1.
The Huskies will be taking on Oswego East this Thursday in Oswego at 4:30pm.
