It’s that time of year again; we would say that spring is in the air because March 1 has quickly passed, but our unpredictable Midwestern weather makes it difficult for us to actually believe that warmer times are growing near. In the fashion world, however, spring seems to be coming with a plethora of new trends. One of the most notable is the high-low dress, which has recently hit the runway and many local department stores.
As its name implies, the dress is shorter (high) in the front and longer (low) in the back. It’s also common to hear it called a “mullet dress,” because of its similarities in length to the popular 1980s hairstyle.
The dress comes in a variety of fabrics, colors and styles; it can be worn casually or formally. When wearing it casually, it is best to pair it with embellished sandals and a jean jacket. If the dress is solid, make large earrings your focal point and keep other jewelry simple. One perfect option is this one from Forever 21. One of the nice aspects of this piece is it is easily dressed up or down depending on what jacket, jewelry and handbag you pair it with.
If one were to choose to wear a high-low dress to a more formal occasion, it can be paired with shimmery heels, an attention-grabbing clutch and jewelry. Many dressier versions of the high/low look can be found at department stores like Nordstrom.
One thing is for sure: the high-low style isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Whether you choose to wear it to the beach, out to dinner or to a formal event, you’ll be sure to find a way to wear this trend that fits your personal style.
