Take 5- Your Winter Checklist

By Production Coordinator Kevin MacGregor

As we continue to brace the bitter temperatures this winter, there seem to be very few options when looking for an exciting escape from the cold. However, you can still have fun despite the plummeting temperatures. Here are a few of my favorite seasonal pastimes that will help get you to spring break before you know it:

1. Considering my Starbucks Coffee addiction, I may or may not have tried all of their recent seasonal flavors. As the winter months roll around, they introduce my personal favorite, the Peppermint Mocha, which provides the perfect holiday taste. It makes the Monday morning trip to school a little less dreary.

2. Cold days barely leave you with enough courage to walk outside for a few seconds to your car. But if you can brave the trip, heading to the movies is always a great idea. Many Oscar-nominated films are still on the big screen, and there will be even more captivating films in theaters soon.

3. Not up for ice-cream in this freezing weather? You still satisfy your sweet tooth with festive treats. Smallcakes Cupcakery offers a variety of flavors along with daily specials. If you happen to stop by the shop on 115 E. Ogden Ave, I highly recommend the Peanut Butter Cup cupcake.

4. If you are the more adventurous type, Chicago is full of winter activities. This year, I’m most excited for the ice skating rink at the new Maggie Daley Park. This rink is different from the traditional one at Millennium Park. Its ribbon-shaped path makes the experience fun and unique for all skaters. Admission to the rink won’t cost you a dime, and skate rentals are available if you don’t have your own pair. If you need to warm up, you can always purchase a cup of hot chocolate too.

5. If you want to stay local, there is always something to do at Naperville North. You could check out a jazz concert on Thursday, Jan. 22 and One Acts just a week later on Friday, Jan 30. and Saturday, Jan. 31. Both events will take place in the NPAC.
