Both boys and girls varsity water polo teams hosted and competed in the Naperville Quint tournament last Friday, March 13 and Saturday, March 14. The girls won all four games and were crowned champions of the tournament, while the boys came out 2-2.

The girls team first took on Naperville Central, blowing them out of the water with a 10-4 victory. The next game was against Waubonsie Valley, in which the Huskies scored a second win with a score of 11-6. Their third game produced the same big lead for the team, beating Metea Valley 12-5. The final match ended in victory once again against Neuqua Valley High School. The Huskies won 10-3, and junior Katie Horn lead the team with six points.

Senior captain Lauren Liberio was proud of how her team played, but knows they still have a lot to prepare.

“We had good defense but there is always room for improvement, especially with the Fenwick game coming up,” Liberio said.

Fenwick is always a top high school for both the boys and girls team to beat when it comes to water polo.

Head coach for the girls team Andy McWhirter took over both team this weekend and was happy with each performance.

“The girls did very well,” McWhirter said. “They sailed all the way through, but the guys had to work a little bit more in the game. Two games were easy for them and two games were even, and they lost by a point or two on both of them.”

The boys were not as lucky to win all four games but came out of the tournament with a solid 2-2 record. They started off strong against Waubonsie Valley with a 13-1 win. Though the next game against Neuqua Valley got a little tougher, the Huskies came back from being down six points to almost winning. However, the final result was a 13-14 loss for the team.

The boys’ luck changed during the next game against Metea Valley. The final score was 14-1 in the Huskies’ favor. But the final game of the tournament proved to be a disappointment after rival Naperville Central captured a final victory over the Huskie boys with a score of 10-8.

Senior captain Drake McClure thought the games went better than expected, especially after having ten seniors graduate last season.

“I think the team played a lot better than anyone expected,” McClure said. “It would’ve been nice to win but I really like how we played. We are a younger team that has a lot of room for improvement. Sophomores Cole Jacobs and JonJon Pettinger really stepped up big and everyone played really well.”

McWhirter was happy on how the boys stuck with it and didn’t give up, especially during the Neuqua game.

“It was a good team effort to get back those points and get back in the game,” McWhirter said. “They could’ve easily given up in the third quarter and said ‘we’re down by six, nothing is gonna happen,’ but they came back in and got right back there on top.”
