This week, “The North Star” met with junior Abbie Boswell, the varsity forward on the girls soccer team. Last year, the varsity girls soccer team won the IHSA state championship for the second time in a row. Despite being an underclassman, Boswell earned 17 goals throughout that season- the most on the team.
Q: What is the best thing about your sport?
A: My favorite thing is that I just love soccer, and playing with my team is just amazing. I love having fun with my soccer team and being happy.
Q: What is the worst thing about your sport?
A: I don’t really have a least favorite thing about my sport, probably it would be running. I don’t really like running.
Q: What coaches and mentors have guided you throughout the years?
A: Definitely [Head Coach Steve] Goletz. He’s helped me with literally everything. He’s helped me improve my soccer, he just does everything for me. Also Mr. Konrad and Ms. Kavanaugh have always been there for me, and that has helped me so much.
Q: How have you evolved as an athlete over the years?
A: I just try to progress and get better every practice and every game. I just try my hardest. I’ve gotten better through the years, and I’m excited to see what comes next. I had to work on my foot skills [because] I didn’t work on them when I was little. Sometimes, I would have a bad touch or something. I had to improve on it, and I did. I’m excited because it is better than it was before.
Q: How are you looking to play your sport outside of school?
A: I’m going to Ball State to play soccer [after NNHS], and I’m so excited because they have a great soccer program and great coaches, and I’m just excited to see what college soccer is like. I’m a little nervous, because you never know what is going to happen or what the team is like. I’m more excited than nervous, because I love Ball State, and I love the teammates there, and I’m so excited to play.
Q: What important contributions do you make to the team?
A: I just try to improve everyday, and help my team improve everyday too.

As someone who’s only ever done baseball, cross country, and track, this interview makes it easy to see things from a soccer players point of view. Go Dawgs!
