The varsity football team earned another DuPage Valley Conference win at home last night, Friday Oct. 5, against the Lake Park Lancers with a final score of 28-24.
The Huskies were able to create big plays both offensively and defensively, and they are still undefeated at home.
“Any time you win in the DVC, it’s a good win,” Head Coach Sean Drendel said. “We’re excited about winning, and [moving] on to Glenbard East next week.”
The Huskies received the opening kick-off and were stuffed on their first drive of the game by the Lancers’ defense. The Lancers received the punt and followed with a strong offensive drive. As they approached the end-zone, however, a pass was intercepted by senior defensive back Danny Shertz, setting a fast tempo for both teams. Before the 1st quarter finished, NNHS captain DeSean Brown scored a touchdown, bringing his season total to ten.
The Lancers fought back hard in the 2nd Quarter, scoring 17 points, while every Huskie drive was stopped short of a score.
“We should have come out a little more ready,” senior receiver Anthony Rehayem said. “So next week, we are going to come out ready to go.”
After the Huskies started the second half with a successful onside kick, Lake Park’s defense forced another punt from the Huskies. But, a fumble in the following drive lead to a Huskie possession and another touchdown by Rehayem. The Huskies held on to the lead for the remainder of the quarter with a score of 21-17.
The Lancers scored a touchdown to start the fourth and held anxiously to their 3-point lead. Ultimately, the Huskies denied this upset and wrapped up the game with another touchdown by Brown. The Lancers put forth many noble efforts to secure their lead once more, but a reception by senior Rashad Crosby with 2:17 left in the game secured the win for the Huskies..
The Huskies are now 3-3 overall, with a 2-2 DVC record. They have also scored first in every game this season.
