Student Services will kick off the first ever Senior College Week this week, Sept. 3-6, an event that aims to teach seniors about the college application process.
There will be a meeting for senior students and parents tonight, Sept. 3. Additionally, counselors will give presentations in the library during the school day to teach seniors how to operate college the planning site Naviance this week.
“The goal is to make this week as enthusiastic as possible. It’s not just about filling out forms and writing essays; it’s about the excitement of going to the college you want to attend,” said Counselor Brian LaPorte.
LaPorte, along with Counselor Laura Iverson and Student Services Director Jeffery Farson, are the staff members behind the planning of the event.
According to Iverson, last year was the first year that NNHS started to use an online system through Naviance to send applications, transcripts, and letters of recommendation to colleges. Those planning the event are hopeful that this week’s guidance will allow the class of 2014 to feel more comfortable with the system than last year’s senior class.
Senior College Week kicks off with an informational meeting tonight at 7:00 pm in the NPAC. This meeting will give an overview to senior students and parents about what to expect for college applications, according to Iverson.
On Sept. 4,5, and 6, counselors will be pulling seniors out of their Communication Arts classes and teaching them how to send their “college bundle” to various schools.
LaPorte said that the week will also bring military recruiters in for those students who wish to serve.
During lunch periods on Sept. 5, presentations will be given to teachers to discuss how to write and send letters of recommendations for students.
Staff is also encouraged to wear their college spirit wear on Wednesday and Thursday, according to Farson.
Senior students are also optimistic about the new program.
“I feel like what they’re teaching us is pretty important to get into college,” senior Barry Robinson said.
Iverson is hopeful for the week too.
“In the future, we’ll want to build on this more. But for now, it’s a start.” Iverson said.
