The NNHS senior ladies have started up a powderpuff football league, reviving what was once an NNHS tradition.
Instead of the huskie football squad suiting up and playing on the field, a number of senior girls have signed up for a female flag football league, otherwise known as powderpuff football.
In previous years, the powderpuff league has been comprised of multiple junior and senior teams that would eventually face off in a daylong tournament. However, although NNHS never had problems with this, other schools had minor hazing incidents that led to the cancelling of future powderpuff leagues.
Karen Quinn, one of the teachers who is heading the powderpuff league, said there was great deal of interest in the idea as well as positive feedback given so far.
“We’ve had a really good turn out. This class has a lot of school spirit and excitement for their senior class as well,” said Quinn.
Quinn also mentioned how there is a change being made this year: instead of juniors and seniors playing, only seniors are allowed.
The rest of the process is simple. Eleven girls are allowed on the field per team and a couple senior boys will coach each team. On April 7th at 1:00 pm, the NNHS stadium will hold the tournament of powderpuff teams. The entire student body is encouraged to come to the stadium and cheer on their favorite team, or just to have fun.
All of the proceeds from the event will go to charity.
“Oh my goodness I am so excited! My sister did [powderpuff] when she was in high school and she’s been telling me great things,” said senior participant Caroline Rico.
Senior participant Anna Derry also shares the excitement.
“I’m on the team District 13. I think we have a pretty good chance [of winning] because we have a lot of athletic girls. Even if we don’t win we’ll have a lot of fun,” Derry said.
