This year, students were no long nominated by their peers for Homecoming court, rather, teachers and other faculty members nominated students from each class due to a decision made by Student Activities and Key Club said Key Club representatives.
They said it was done to make the whole process easier and fairer.
“Having teachers nominate students allows the nominations to be from an administrative point of view, allowing students with notable character to be recognized,” said Senior Nathan Moxon, Co-President of Key Club.
For the most part, the students nominated by teachers are individuals that they believe are influential in their grades and have made a positive contribution to Naperville North thus far. Additionally, those who were nominated were most likely similar to those who the students would have picked because of the fact they stand out among the crowd and are generally very involved in school activities, sports, or clubs.
“[Teachers] chose students that well represent their class—students who demonstrate positive energy and have good integrity in and outside the classroom,” said Student Government Ambassador Jodi Nemethy.
Another change made to the voting process is that students are now able to vote online at home or at school for Homecoming court. In the past students had to vote on specific days during their lunch periods in their lunchrooms, but the new procedure allows for a longer time period for students to cast their votes.
Furthermore, it is more convenient for students because they can now vote wherever and whenever they want to and they don’t have to worry about peers seeing their votes.
“The teacher nomination and online voting system work well together and present a more organized and fair way of continuing the Homecoming tradition,” said Moxon.
