Trying to balance a relationship with academics has always been a challenge for students in high school. Some students at Naperville North High School choose to kill two birds with one stone and openly air their relationship out to the masses at NNHS.
“The job is to be a student, not to date,” said Dean Jacquie Discipio.
Discipio along with her fellow deans, and teachers at NNHS attempt to address disrespectful behavior such as PDA to maintain the reputation that North has hung its hat on for many years. They try to be in the hallways to monitor the actions of students and to stop the situation before it gets out of hand. The expectation that students at NNHS are held to is to be respectful of one another and most of all themselves.
“We teach students to be caring and respectful to one another and want students to have fun in a safe and respectful manner,” said Discipio.
That doesn’t mean that in school relationships are prohibited, Discipio noted that these relationships are a big part of a student’s high school experience. Holding hands, walking one another to class, and hugging are all acceptable romantic gestures that are respectful and approved.
John Cole, Chemistry teacher at NNHS, draws attention to the couple to make them feel uncomfortable so that they will stop their inappropriate behavior. Cole does this because he believes school isn’t the appropriate place to make out.
“If your aren’t willing to do it in front of everyone, then why do it at all?” said Cole.
Jenna Dubinoff and Kiera Flaherty, sophomores at NNHS, believe that its really irritating to have to walk around couples who are making out, and that they would personally be embarrassed to be caught doing that in front of her peers and teachers.
Shay Gallagher, Art Department teacher at NNHS, along with Cole tries to make things awkward to discourage students from kissing in plain sight.
Gallagher comments that the little things are the most romantic and credits a couple that can handle their relationship respectfully in public.
She praises the couple outside of her room because the boy is considerate and he kisses his girlfriend’s hand before she leaves.
Gallagher and Cole both like to repulse the offenders of PDA with the situation of their teachers making out in the hallways. However, there are teachers in the school that are married and that are able to handle themselves when they are around one another.
“Mr. Clark and Mrs. Clark are married and you don’t see them making out,” said Gallagher
