Naperville North High School junior Will Harvey is a standout student-athlete, balancing varsity football and basketball while excelling academically.
Harvey is a two-year varsity basketball player, and a one-year varsity football player. For Harvey, the key is concentrating on the task directly in front of him. Harvey states how he’s managed to perform to his fullest capabilities within each sport.
“The main focus is whatever season I’m in,” Harvey said. “In the off-season, I work on both sports by improving my speed, strength, and abilities.”
As an upperclassman, Harvey embraces his leadership responsibilities. This discipline has translated into success on the field and court, as Harvey continues to play an integral role for his teams. Harvey’s ability to connect with teammates also sets him apart.
“I make sure to talk to everyone and let them know no one is below me … we’re one team with one goal: winning,” Harvey said.
Game day preparation is an important part of Harvey’s routine, as it helps him become mentally ready. He believes that sticking to a routine keeps him sharp and ready for any challenge. Harvey explains how maintaining consistency allows him to step onto the field with confidence and a clear mindset.
“I get a snack, listen to music, and think about my family and the name on my jersey,” he said. “When it’s game time, I focus on controlling what I can control,” Harvey said.
Balancing academics and athletics is another challenge, but even in the most high-pressure moments, Harvey remains composed by trusting his preparation. Harvey explains how his concentrated mindset allows him to overcome fatigue and challenges.
“I remind myself this is what I’ve worked for,” he said. “It’s all about grit and being relentless,” Harvey said.
Through the challenges he’s faced in athletics, he has developed a strong sense of tenacity, pushing himself to overcome obstacles and keep improving. Harvey credits sports with shaping his character.
“I’ve learned toughness, leadership, and communication,” he said. “These skills have helped me build relationships and will benefit me in the future.”
Looking ahead to his senior year, Harvey has clear goals for athletics, academics and his personal growth. Although he is already a 2-year varsity basketball player as a junior, he’s determined to finish strong and be a role model for his younger brother, who will join Naperville North next year.
“My biggest goal is leaving North better than I found it … I want to make sure the Harvey name is respected” Harvey said.
With his potent focus, leadership and drive, Harvey is poised to make a lasting impact at Naperville North.
