Huskie soccer begins state tournament run with win

The Naperville North Boys’ soccer team kicked off this season’s playoff run with a shutout victory, but still believe they have a lot to work on to end the season the way they want to.

The Naperville North Huskies (20-0, 4-0) defeated the East Aurora Tomcats (6-10-7, 2-3-4) by a final score of 5-0.

Despite going into halftime with a 2-0 lead with goals from juniors Zach Smith and Ty Konrad, the Huskies believed they still had some things to work on.

“We struggled to get organized early, I thought that put us in a bad spot mentally,” head coach Jim Konrad said. “In the second half we did a much better job sorting out the midfield, sorting out the runners out top.”

The Huskies were able to pull away in the second half with additional goals from Zach Smith, who had a hat trick on the night and a free-kick shot from Patrick Koenig.

“I thought Zach [Smith] and Patrick [Koenig] really lifted their games in the second half and they powered us through, they just took over and they got a couple of goals that changed everything,” Konrad said.

The Huskies will have a couple of days to prepare for their next playoff game this Friday against either Neuqua Valley or Naperville Central at 4:30 P.M.
