Up and coming artist Khalid’s new album does not disappoint
19-year-old El Paso native Khalid Robinson, a.k.a.“Khalid,” dropped his debut album this month and it did not disappoint. “American Teen,” released Mar. 3, is already a big hit amongst listeners, and it’s easy to see why. From the get-go, Khalid’s voice is unique yet familiar, bold yet comforting. His voice is truly great and his passion is obvious in any song you listen to.
The first song off the tracklist has the same title as the album and sets up the whole experience that is this album. Combining techno sound effects and a little bit of R&B, “American Teen” is the perfect song to kick off the album.
Here are my top three songs on “American Teen.”
In third place is “Location.” It’s definitely more intimate than his other songs, but it has so much soul in it that I was automatically drawn to play this song over and over. “Location” was released in 2016 and is currently his most listened to song on Spotify at 57 million listens.
Number two in my top three is the song “Young, Dumb, & Broke.” This song’s mellow groove makes it easy to listen to over and over, and perfectly describes high school and adolescence.
Topping my list is none other than “8TEEN.” This song is nothing short of a bop and is the perfect song for spring break and summer, which thankfully are approaching soon. I can’t help but smile when I listen to this song and it is my most-listened to song on the album. It’s the perfect song to roll your windows down and drive around to.
If you’re looking for some slower songs, “Therapy,” “Coaster,” and “Shot Down” are good go tos for whatever mood you’re in. To be honest, any of the album’s songs are good picks.
Also, if you’re looking for someone interesting to follow on Twitter, Khalid’s handle is @thegreatkhalid, and he tweets pretty funny content from time to time. He’s also very down-to-earth and often takes the time to respond to his fan’s tweets about him— which is rare among celebrities and very telling of his great character.
Whether you’re happy and anxiously counting down the days until summer, or in a slump and just looking to vibe for a little, “American Teen” by Khalid is an album you want blasting through your speakers this year.
