Johnson shines as Huskies pull out a win at Thanksgiving tournament
After the basketball season got underway last night, it became quite apparent that there was a new sheriff in town–his name is Chris Johnson.
The towering sophomore made his varsity debut last night, and was nothing short of stellar. Scoring 15 points and snagging 12 rebounds, Johnson ultimately guided the team to a 57-46 victory, according to head coach Jeff Powers.
“Overall we had a good game. Chris was outstanding,” Powers said.
Johnson’s teammate, senior T.J. Agayake, said that Johnson is an asset to the team.
“Chris is really young but really good, he really understands the game,” Agayake said.
The Huskies jumped out to an early 15-9 lead in a dominating first quarter, including several three-pointers from junior Benet transfer Tyler Carlson and very stingy, grimy defense.
Things tailed off in the second quarter, with North accumulating several trivial fouls, allowing for opponent Hinsdale Central (0-1) to eventually pull even and take a six point lead into halftime.
“I thought our first quarter was good, but in the second we had too many turnovers,” Powers said.
After almost letting the game get away in the third, the Huskies closed the gap in the fourth quarter and exploded on a 14-5 run, featuring a couple of strong finishes at the basket for both Johnson and Carlson’s fifth three-pointer of the evening, sealing the deal with a final score of 57-46.
Juniors Winston Elston and Cam Hardy added 10 and 6 points respectively, and senior Jelani McClain also dropped 6. Foul trouble did limit the playing time of both McClain and Hardy.
The Huskies seek to remain in the win column as the proceed into the season.
