Huskie soccer beats WVHS 5-1 to clinch DVC title
NNHS Varsity Boys Soccer had a successful night at home in the DuPage Valley Conference (DVC) match-up Wednesday against Waubonsie Valley (WVHS) with a decisive 5-1 victory behind a hat-trick from junior captain Chris Sullivan.
The game got off to a slow start with spectacular defense. It wasn’t until there were two minutes left in the first half that WVHS got on the board when junior midfielder Noah Michael put one in the back of the net.
The Huskies were determined to start the second half strong, and this clearly showed from their early aggressiveness. It took only six minutes for sophomore Jack Barry to knot the score at 1. Almost a half-hour in, Sullivan got his first goal of the night on a rocket from outside the box. Over the course of the next ten minutes, the Huskies scored three more times, two of the goals from Sullivan, and an additional one from senior captain Grant Borg.
The score settled at 5-1 and didn’t budge for the remainder of the game. With 15 minutes to go, all seniors were subbed in and got a chance to take the field.
“It feels great to accomplish one of our goals, but we have bigger things ahead of us,” Sullivan said. “Winning this builds our confidence for the playoffs, but it’s important to stay humble as a team.”
This concludes the regular season for the Huskies, finishing with an overall record of 14-4 and a conference record of 7-1. They were also able to clinch their second consecutive DVC championship going into sectionals next week.
The Huskies open up bracket play on Tuesday, October 20, at home against the West Aurora Blackhawks.
