Boys gymnastics team sweeps senior night
The boys gymnastics team won all three competition levels against Glenbard North (GBN) on Wednesday, March 18. Naperville North celebrated their senior night with a varsity score of 143.400 to GBN’s 117.100.
The Huskies took full advantage of their experienced line-up as they entered their final home meet of the season. They gained the state-high team score of the season. Head coach Brad Foerch was especially impressed with how strong the team looked so early in the season.
“It was a nice night,” Foerch said. “We’re still making mistakes, but it’s still early. We still have a few more elements that we want to put in. Each added element is worth half a point, so we can really do some things to up our score.”
The varsity team started the night with senior Ryan Riley, whose floor routine earned him a commendable 8.500. Senior Brandon Louise led on floor routine, earning a 8.800 for his performance. But on pommel horse, Louise struggled to get through his routine, facing a full point deduction for two early dismounts. This struggle reflected his team’s inability to get going early on.
Despite a lingering illness, junior Yudai Okabe took to the rings, determined to help his team achieve victory over the Panthers. With his flawless L-sit iron cross, Okabe garnered the team-high of 8.200 in this event.
Junior varsity gymnast Sean Davis was able to jump-start the varsity squad on vault, earning a career-high vault score of 7.900. Putting three varsity gymnasts on vault, the Huskies pulled an impressive team score of 25.900 for the event. Seniors Allen Peng and Miko Matz led parallel and high bars, respectively, Peng gaining 8.400 to Matz’s 8.200.
Also taking the spotlight was experienced freshman Ethan Soto, who was able to add his score to team’s varsity pommel and parallel bars score. Louise, the team’s sole all-around competitor, was crowned the all-around champion with a score of 46.600.
With only away meets for the rest of the season, the Huskies continue to prepare for competition in the upcoming months. According to Louise, the depth of talent on the team has proved critical to their success so far.
“Seeing other teams, you might think that they’re a little better than our team,” Louise said. “But really, it’s the third scorer that sets us apart. It’s a good feeling to have if you don’t hit, there is another teammate standing behind you that will hit for you.”
The Huskies will face Wheaton Co-Op at Wheaton-Warrenville South next Wednesday, March 25.
