Athletes succeed at IHSA State

It was a great weekend for Huskie athletes.
Senior Chris Zhang placed fifth at the IHSA State wrestling tournament on Saturday, Feb. 21. He was trailing 8-1, but he got a pin to secure his fifth place finish. He is the first Huskie wrestler to be on the IHSA medal stand in six years.
Senior gymnast Michaela Robert placed eighth in the all around at the IHSA State Tournament. She was also awarded the Illinois Senior Gymnast of the Year.
For men’s swim and dive, a lot of swimmers qualified for the upcoming state meet this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28 and March 1. Freshman I.I Qiao, freshman Josh Tak, sophomore Brandon Chan and senior Joe Cassano qualified for the Medley relay. Cassano also qualified for 50 Free, and Qiao for the 200 IM. Junior Jeff Leu qualified for the 100 Butterfly. Senior Joe Tomashek, junior Charlie Calvo, sophomore Nick Zillier and senior Joe Cassano qualified in the 200 Free Relay. Senior Billy Troy, junior Jeff Leu, senior Joe Tomashek and freshman I.I. Qiao qualified in the 400 Free Relay. For diving, senior Thomas Petersen placed second in sectionals last Saturday, Feb. 21. He will be competing in the state meet on this Friday morning, Feb. 27.
