Science lab to be renovated
This summer, room 154, a science lab at Naperville North, will undergo various renovations, according to assistant principal Ronald Helms.
According to Steve Mathis, District 203’s director of buildings and grounds, the renovations will include changes to the flooring, ceiling, counters, fixtures, plumbing, and electrical system.
“You’re talking about fixtures that have been there since 1972-73. They’re worn out, and they’re not meeting the needs of the programming anymore,” Mathis said. “They need to be updated.”
This will be the fifth science classroom to be renovated in the last two school years, according to Mathis. In previous years, rooms 142, 144,146, and 148 have been renovated.
According to Ronald Helms, the need for the renovations was brought to the district’s attention by NNHS’ administration.
“Every year [in January], each department makes a list of various changes they need done,” Helms said. “This year, room 154 was on that list.”
The list of necessary renovations will be reviewed by facilities manager Lisa Corrigan, principal Kevin Pobst, and Helms before it is sent to the district to be approved.
The total cost of the renovations is $230,000, Mathis said.
“I’m not a teacher, but I’d imagine the way we teach isn’t the same as it was before. Some of the rooms are original rooms,” Helms said. “These changes need to be done.”
