Time Out with Baylor Griffin

Varsity basketball newcomer discusses his contributions to his new team

By Staff Writer Jennifer Fortman

“The North Star” caught up with junior Baylor Griffin to talk about basketball and whether or not he plans to play ball in college.

Since Griffin moved to Naperville, he has made a huge contribution to the NNHS boys varsity basketball team (5-3,1-2 DuPage Valley Conference), scoring an average of ten points a game and grabbing seven rebounds a game as well.

Q: What is the best thing about your sport?

A: [I enjoy] hanging out with the team and fighting together on the court to ultimately win basketball games.

Q: What’s the worst thing about your sport?

A: [The worst is] when you practice hard all week and don’t pull out the win on Friday night. This isn’t always bad because it motivates us to work even harder the following week.

Q: How far do you want to go with your sport?

A: I actually do not know how far I want to go with basketball. If the opportunity approaches me, I guess I will play in college, but for now I want to enjoy high school.

Q: What’s the most important contribution you make to your sport?

A: I would like to think the most important contribution I make to basketball is being a great teammate. I hope the team knows that I would do anything for them and will always watch their backs.

Q: How have you evolved as an athlete over the years?

A: In seventh grade, I played for my middle school’s team, eighth grade I played for the freshman team, freshman year I played on JV, and sophomore year I played varsity. The thing that helped me out the most was just working hard day in and day out.

Q: What coaches or mentors have inspired you over the years?

A: My fifth through ninth grade travel coach helped me out the most. He recommended me to other coaches, allowed me to play with some elite teams, and pushed me every day. My dad also helps me out because he was my basketball coach in second grade and ever since we have shared the love of the game.
