The “North Star” caught up with junior Michaela Robert, a girls varsity gymnastics captain. Last year, the team took first in both the DuPage Valley Conference and Regional meets. Now, Robert looks to help the team take the state series by storm and improve herself along the way.

Q: What’s the best thing about your sport?

A: My favorite thing about the sport is how much you will surprise yourself, especially with how far you push yourself. The sport really tests you, mentally and physically, so you’ll really figure out how far you’ll be able to go. It pushes your limits a lot. Also, the friendships  you make with your teammates is something really important, and something I really love about the sport, too. Some of my best friends come from sports.

Q: What’s the worst thing about your sport?

A: My least favorite part would probably be the mental part. This sport tests you physically and mentally, so getting rid of these mental blocks, sometimes right before you go in for a new skill for the first time, is pretty hard and challenging. It’s very rewarding once you get over it.

Q: How far do you want to go with your sport?

A: I would love to do this sport in college, whether it be D1, D2, or D3, and hopefully I will be able to get a scholarship for it, too. So basically, I’m not looking to stop anytime soon.

Q: How have you evolved as an athlete over the years?

A: Just looking back from when I started the sport, it’s really crazy how far I’ve come. I’ve been doing it for 12 years now, so I’ve really progressed throughout the years. Especially recently, I think my work ethic have gotten a lot more intense. I’m pushing myself a lot harder.

Q: What coaches and/or mentors have inspired you over the years?

A: I’ve stuck with the same club basically my whole life. So my club coach, Jeff. He is just amazing and I have really built a really awesome relationship. He’s not one to yell at you or criticize you for every little thing. Also my high school coach, Stano [Head Coach Chris Stanicek] really taught me a lot about commitment and he’s really pushed my limits for the better.
