Boys water polo wins against Hinsdale Central

The Naperville North boys water polo team defeated Hinsdale Central High School 14-4 on Tuesday, April 21.

NNHS started off with a strong lead over HCHS. They ended with an early 4-0. In fact, the Red Devils’ first point would not come until the second period. Then, they ended the first half 8-1. This game proved to be a genuine team effort, according to senior captain Joe Tomashek.

“That game went pretty well,” Tomashek said. “Our first eight goals came from eight different people so I think that shows that we played like a team. There really wasn’t just one person who controlled it so that’s pretty good.”

Junior Spencer Wallace was happy that his team was able to gain such a substantial lead. They took that advantage and practiced different offenses. According to Wallace, people were put into different positions, and they found opportunity to improve areas that are not usually addressed.

“When we are up by a good amount, we focus on things that we normally don’t run as well against our opponents,” Wallace said. “We run different offenses that we aren’t used to running or put players in positions that they aren’t used to playing at.”

The Red Devils failed to score against the Huskies until the fourth period. At that time, they built momentum to sink three additional goals. Moving forward from this win, Wallace hopes his team can tighten their defense.

Tomashek said the team played well, especially considering the varying experience levels of those competing.

“Sometimes we have had problems in other games,” Tomashek said. “But we held strong for this one because everyone knew what they were doing. It didn’t really matter who was in the pool.”
