Time Out with Will Littell

By Sports Editor Jay Ahuja

“The North Star” caught up with senior Will Littell, captain of the volleyball team at Naperville North. Littell told us about his future plans, and he shared what his volleyball career has taught him.

Q: What’s the best thing about your sport?

A: Other than being able to destroy in gym class, I really like how you can play volleyball year round. When it’s not school or club season, it’s still easy to find a gym to play three on three or six on six. If that isn’t possible, I love playing beach volleyball or even in somebody’s backyard. [This] way, I get to be with my teammates even in the offseason.

Q: What’s the worst thing about your sport?

A: My position, libero, isn’t allowed to hit. This can be disappointing at times, but there’s nothing I love more than diving to save a ball an opposing hitter thought he put away.

Q: How far do you want to go with volleyball?

A: I’m planning on playing volleyball at the University of Cincinnati next year at the club level.

Q: What’s the most important contribution you make to your team?

A: My major contribution to the team is passing dimes on a daily basis. Past that, I always try to be the loudest one on the court, and I constantly communicate with my teammates so we are all on the same page.

Q: How have you evolved as an athlete over the years?

A: I came into Naperville North with no volleyball experience. I wasn’t exactly sure about what position I should play in the beginning, which resulted in me being a timid player in the wrong spot. Over the years, I have found where I am most successful on the court, and I continue to improve my skills everyday. Now, I am a confident player and part of a varsity team that is ready to give opponents the business.

Q: What coaches and/or mentors have inspired you over the years?

A: All of the coaches I’ve had at North have pushed me and really helped to develop me as a volleyball player, but the person who has helped and inspired me the most is my club volleyball coach Josh Zolecki. The only thing greater than his passion for the game is his kindness, and I will always aspire to achieve the things he has in life.
